Amashova Classic
History (1986 – 2024)
South Africa’s oldest classic cycle race, inspired by the Comrades Marathon route, was founded in 1986 by Dave Wiseman and Tony McMillan. Despite initial resistance, participation grew slowly until 1998, when support from Durban’s Mayor and Transport Minister led to full road closure and a City Hall finish. With major sponsorship, the Shova became KZN’s biggest cycling race.
